DepEd will open regular drug testing in High Schools

The Department of Education (DepEd) is planning to conduct regular drug tests on public and private high school students in accordance of the Duterte administration’s fight on illegal drugs.

DepEd Assistant Secretary Jesus Mateo, however, told GMA 7 news program “24 Oras” on Friday that the undertaking would need major bigger funding.

At present, the agency was limited to random drug tests in schools.

Mateo also said they would improve the curriculum on the dangers of drug use, incidents of which were seen among some students from Grade 7 onwards.

“May mga report na ganoon, mangilan ngilan. Ang na-observe ko lang dito sa mga matataong lugar ‘yun (naitatala),” the DepEd official said.

Mateo however pointed out that fighting the drug menace was everyone’s responsibility, and should not be left to teachers and police officers alone.
